The First 30 Days: Your Salon Suite Startup Checklist

The First 30 Days: Your Salon Suite Startup Checklist

Your salon suite is officially yours. You’ve got the keys, you’ve decorated your space, and you’re ready to open the doors. But before you post that “Now Open” sign on Instagram, there’s essential work to do in your first 30 days.

These weeks set the tone for your entire business. Do them right, and you’ll have the systems, clients, and momentum to succeed. Rush through them, and you’ll spend the next year fixing preventable mistakes.

Here’s exactly what to tackle in your first month.

Week 1: Foundation & Setup

Days 1–2: Business Essentials

  • [ ] Establish your business structure (sole proprietor, LLC, S-corp) and get an EIN
  • [ ] Open a business bank account separate from your personal account
  • [ ] Set up basic bookkeeping system (spreadsheet or QuickBooks)
  • [ ] Research and purchase business liability insurance
  • [ ] Confirm your salon suite rental agreement covers all terms (cancellation, utilities, concierge services)

Days 3–4: Operations Setup

  • [ ] Choose and set up your appointment booking system (Vagaro, Square Appointments, Acuity, etc.)
  • [ ] Create a simple pricing list for all your services
  • [ ] Design a basic client intake form (can be digital or paper)
  • [ ] Stock your suite with essential supplies and products
  • [ ] Test all furniture, lighting, and equipment—report any issues immediately

Days 5–7: Brand Identity

  • [ ] Create a simple logo or finalize branding if you have one
  • [ ] Write a short 2–3 sentence “About Me” bio for your suite and social media
  • [ ] Decide on your brand colors and fonts (keep it cohesive)
  • [ ] Design basic business cards (can order online same-week)
  • [ ] Plan your social media posting schedule for the next 4 weeks

Week 2: Client Acquisition & Marketing Launch

Days 8–10: Digital Presence

  • [ ] Create or update Instagram profile with professional photos of your suite and services
  • [ ] Post your first 5 carousel posts or Reels (before/after, service tips, behind-the-scenes)
  • [ ] Set up Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) with accurate location, hours, phone
  • [ ] Create a simple website landing page or use a platform like Beacons or Linktree
  • [ ] Join local West Palm Beach Facebook groups for beauty professionals and potential clients

Days 11–13: Direct Outreach

  • [ ] Text or email your existing client list (if you have one) your new suite details and booking link
  • [ ] Reach out to 10–20 people personally: “I’ve opened a suite, would love to see you”
  • [ ] Offer a “launch special” for first-time clients (10–15% discount or free add-on service)
  • [ ] Ask satisfied clients for reviews on Google, Instagram, or Facebook
  • [ ] Create a simple referral incentive (e.g., “$20 off for every friend you refer”)

Days 14–15: Community Connection

  • [ ] Visit neighboring businesses in your suite/mall and introduce yourself
  • [ ] Connect with the concierge team and other salon suite professionals at your location
  • [ ] Ask the concierge for tips on who they recommend and what services are in demand
  • [ ] Follow and comment on local West Palm Beach beauty businesses and influencers
  • [ ] Identify 2–3 complementary services you could partner with (photographer, makeup artist, lash tech)

Week 3: Systems & Client Experience

Days 16–19: Client Operations

  • [ ] Create a simple client communication template for confirmations and reminders
  • [ ] Set up automated appointment reminders (most booking systems have this built-in)
  • [ ] Establish a cancellation/rescheduling policy and communicate it clearly
  • [ ] Create a client checklist: what clients need to know before their first appointment
  • [ ] Set up a simple follow-up system (text, email, or message 3 days post-appointment)
  • [ ] Take 10–15 high-quality photos of your work and suite space for social content

Days 20–21: Financial Foundations

  • [ ] Reconcile your first week of transactions (even if small)
  • [ ] Create a simple monthly budget: estimate expenses and income goals
  • [ ] Set aside your first quarterly tax payment (consult a tax pro if unsure of percentage)
  • [ ] Research accounting software or identify an accountant for year-end
  • [ ] Create a simple invoice template if you offer package deals or retail

Week 4: Momentum & Growth Planning

Days 22–25: Content & Visibility

  • [ ] Post consistently: 3–4 times per week minimum on Instagram
  • [ ] Share client testimonials and before/afters (with permission)
  • [ ] Go live on Instagram or TikTok: tour your suite, answer FAQs, show personality
  • [ ] Engage with 15–20 comments daily on your posts and local beauty accounts
  • [ ] Create 2–3 video clips (Reels/TikTok length: 15–60 seconds) showing services or tips
  • [ ] Write 1–2 carousel posts about common client questions or beauty tips in your niche

Days 26–28: Evaluation & Adjustment

  • [ ] Count your booked appointments for week 1 and 2—are you on track?
  • [ ] Review your Instagram analytics: which posts got the most engagement?
  • [ ] Ask your first 5 clients for honest feedback (in person or via text)
  • [ ] Identify what marketing is working (direct referrals? Instagram? Word-of-mouth?)
  • [ ] Adjust your strategy based on data (double down on what’s working, drop what isn’t)

Days 29–30: Planning Ahead

  • [ ] Schedule your July posts and content in bulk for August
  • [ ] Plan 2–3 special promotions or packages for the next month
  • [ ] Set a revenue and client goal for Month 2
  • [ ] Identify one new marketing channel to test (Pinterest, TikTok, local partnerships, etc.)
  • [ ] Celebrate your first month—you’ve done the hard work!

Red Flags to Avoid in Week 1

Don’t neglect your taxes. Set aside 25–30% of your income immediately for taxes. Federal, state, and self-employment taxes are your responsibility now.

Don’t undercharge. Your pricing should reflect your skill level and the private, premium experience clients are paying for. If you charged $80 on commission, charge $90–$100 in your suite.

Don’t ignore the concierge. Your suite’s concierge team is a huge asset. Build a relationship, communicate regularly, and ask for referrals. They know what services clients are asking for.

Don’t wait for clients to come to you. Your first 30 days are critical. Spend significant time on outreach—texts, calls, Instagram, local partnerships. Passive approach = slow month 1.

Don’t skip the legal/financial setup. You might think it’s unnecessary, but it protects you, makes taxes easier, and makes your business look legitimate (which matters for future loans, partnerships, or selling).

Your First Month Success Formula

Week 1: Get organized
Week 2: Get visible
Week 3: Get systematic
Week 4: Get momentum

Follow this sequence, and you’ll have:

  • A professional, organized business
  • Initial client pipeline
  • Clear marketing strategy
  • Systems that scale as you grow
  • Confidence heading into month 2
